Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
A solar cell is an electronic device that converts energy from sunlight into electricity. Solar energy is considered the best clean, natural energy: besides saving money and reducing environmental problems, solar is a "survival energy" that can help solve the energy crisis the world faces today. It is truly accessible to everyone and can be used without limit, with no impact on nature or living things. That's why solar is key to SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy, which aims to get everyone using clean energy so every part of the world can escape the energy crisis and access electricity sustainably at a fair price
Today, solar panels are mostly made from silicon (Si), the cheapest and most abundant material on Earth, which is processed scientifically into thin, pure wafers — the key material in solar panels. Other materials can also be used to make solar cells, such as Gallium Arsenide, Indium Phosphide, Cadmium Telluride and Copper Indium Diselenide
A solar panel has 2 layers:
1) N-Type: a silicon wafer doped with phosphorus, which makes it release electrons when it receives energy from sunlight
2) P-Type: a silicon wafer doped with boron, which leaves its atomic structure short of electrons (holes); when it receives energy from sunlight it acts as an electron acceptor. Joining the two types with a p–n junction creates a "solar cell"
How a solar panel works: when sunlight hits the panel, it transfers energy to the electrons and holes, setting them in motion. The electrons gather at the Front Electrode and the holes at the Back Electrode, and when the circuit is complete, an electric current is produced that we can use
When sunlight hits the solar panels, light energy is converted into direct current (DC), which passes through the inverter to become alternating current (AC). This is fed into the building's main distribution board (MDB), where it blends with grid power and flows automatically to your appliances
No. Because the installed system is connected to the utility grid (On-Grid), the inverter shuts down automatically when the power goes out. This protects utility workers repairing the lines: if the system kept running, the electricity it produces could flow back into the grid and endanger the workers fixing it
It is the connection between the Metropolitan or Provincial Electricity Authority's grid and the solar power system on your roof. Because electricity is a regulated form of energy, the relevant government agencies must be notified in line with official rules and regulations
Solar can be installed on all roof types except corrugated metal sheets and Roman Tile roofs over 10 years old. Roofs steeper than 60 degrees are not recommended
Normally, rain and the tilt of the installation wash dust off naturally. If you want to clean the panels yourself, simply spray water as a fine mist like rain, only over the tempered glass, avoid spraying underneath the panels, and wash when the sun isn't out
Throughout the project contract, the company will also send staff to inspect and maintain the equipment at least twice a year
Anything that reduces light intensity, such as shade, clouds, dust, leaves and the installation angle. Throughout the project contract, the company will send staff to inspect and maintain the equipment at least twice a year
Solar panels typically carry a manufacturer's warranty of 30 years with at least 80% efficiency. Beyond 30 years, efficiency declines with age and maintenance
Anywhere with sunlight. The most popular options are ground-mounted and rooftop systems, plus carports and canopies — and today there is also floating solar on water
For maximum performance, face the panels south at a 10–15 degree tilt. Avoid facing them north unless necessary, and install them where trees or buildings won't cast shade
With today's technology, batteries can store solar electricity for use at night. If you want a 100% self-sufficient system, you'll need more panels to produce enough power and a battery large enough to store it — just as a heavy phone user who needs it all day needs a big power bank. However, large storage batteries are still very expensive
It's possible if the installation isn't designed properly. That's why you should use a standards-compliant installer, and an engineer should survey the building structure before installation to design for your structure and roof type. The installation should also leave enough roof space to reach the panels for future maintenance
A 1-kilowatt solar system (10 panels of 120 × 60 cm) produces 1,300 kWh/yr (units per year)
Greenhouse gas calculation: GHG emissions = Activity Data × Emission Factor
= 1,300 kWh × 0.6933 kgCO2e/kWh
= 901.3 kgCO2e
So a 1-kilowatt solar system cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 901.3 kgCO2e a year — equivalent to planting about 101 trees (one mature tree absorbs about 8 kg of carbon dioxide a year)
Popular system sizes on the market start at around 3 kWp. To get the best value, the system shouldn't be larger than your daytime base load, so you can use the electricity it produces efficiently
Solar installations also have fixed costs, such as installation labor, that don't change with size. Systems under 3 kWp can still be installed, but the average cost per kWp will be higher
Maintenance costs, such as panel cleaning or inverter replacement, vary depending on usage conditions and the equipment you choose
Yes. Solar genuinely cuts electricity bills, depending on the system size and output. Solar generates power for daytime use and can cut your bill by 40–80% a month
For rooftop solar, the installer is responsible for applying for permission and making sure the installed capacity doesn't exceed the local transformer's capacity
A solar system produces power according to light intensity. With suitable light intensity it runs at full efficiency, which isn't necessarily about how strong the sun feels
A solar installation typically pays back in 3–6 years, depending on factors such as your electricity use and any support your business receives — for example special interest rates from financial institutions or Board of Investment (BOI) incentives, which can effectively cut the investment by up to 50%
Currently, the government buys surplus electricity only from residential systems with an installed capacity of no more than 10 kilowatts
There are 2 types of maintenance: preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance. Both should be carried out by experts so the solar system runs at full efficiency throughout its lifetime
Solar systems are designed with lightning protection according to engineering principles. The chance of a strike is the same as anywhere else — installing solar doesn't increase it, because solar panels aren't lightning rods. The installation also includes earthing to protect against lightning
Rooftop solar won't make your building hotter. It actually helps lower indoor temperatures and reduces air-conditioning load, because the panels are the first surface the sun hits and filter part of the light before heat reaches the roof
1) It's a technology that generates electricity without burning fossil fuels, so it emits very little CO2 over its lifetime
2) Solar energy never runs out
3) Solar is clean, accessible to everyone and a modern technology
4) Rooftop solar generates electricity and cuts your power bill
5) Electricity from solar doesn't pollute the air (Zero Emission)

Atmoce is a micro-inverter from Germany. Its strengths are European-standard safety and easy expansion, making it ideal for homes that want to adopt solar gradually without a big upfront investment
Atmoce focuses on German micro-inverters, ideal for homes that want to start with a small solar system and expand later without a large upfront investment. Huawei and Sungrow focus on central (String/Hybrid) inverters suited to larger systems such as whole homes or factories, while Sigenergy is All-in-One, combining solar, battery, EV charger and AI Energy Management — ideal for premium homes and projects that want a complete solution
Micro-inverters work independently on each panel, so if one panel is shaded or has a problem, the rest of the system isn't affected — unlike a string inverter, where the whole system's performance depends on the weakest panel. Micro-inverters are also safer, avoid excessively high voltages, are easy to expand and let you monitor each panel in the app
Small to mid-sized homes that want to start with a few panels and expand later — for example homes with limited roof space or a smaller starting budget that still want a system meeting European safety standards
Yes. Because Atmoce uses a micro-inverter on each panel, you can start with just a few panels and add new panels with their own micro-inverters later, without dismantling the existing system
